Flying With a Wedding Dress

A practical guide by Gown and Altar

Flying with a wedding dress can feel stressful. Your gown is delicate, valuable, and usually one of the most important things you’ll ever pack. Whether you’re heading overseas for a destination wedding or travelling within New Zealand, preparation is everything.

Here’s your complete guide to safely flying with a wedding dress so it arrives looking just as beautiful as when it left the studio.

Start with the Right Dress

Not all gowns travel the same. Lightweight fabrics are easier to pack and less prone to wrinkling.

Best for travel:

  • Polyester
  • Soft tulle
  • Crepe
  • Minimal silhouettes

Structured gowns and heavy satin can still fly safely, but they require careful folding and steaming later.

Can You Take Your Wedding Dress on a Plane?

Yes. Brides travel with wedding dresses every day.

The key rule:
Always carry it onboard. Avoid checking it wherever possible.

Does a Wedding Dress Count as Carry-On?

Yes. Your dress counts as one carry-on item whether it’s in:

  • a garment bag
  • a small suitcase

Can I Take My Wedding Dress as Hand Luggage?

Yes, and it’s strongly recommended so it stays with you at all times.

How to Carry Your Wedding Dress on a Plane

Garment Bag

  • Fold gently if needed
  • Lay flat in overhead
  • Add tissue between layers

Hard Carry-On Suitcase (recommended)

  • Professionally folded by your seamstress
  • Protects from crushing and spills

How to Pack Your Wedding Dress

  • Pad delicate areas with tissue
  • Turn inside out if heavily beaded
  • Avoid sharp creases

Use a Garment Bag

A bridal garment bag protects from:

  • dust
  • moisture
  • friction

Opaque bags are best. Buy wedding dress bag

Preparing Your Dress for Air Travel

  • Check fabric care instructions
  • Pack with acid-free tissue
  • Keep shoes separate

Storing your dress during flight

  • Lay flat in overhead
  • Board early if possible
  • Do not rely on closets

Working with Flight Attendants

Flight attendants are often wonderful when it comes to helping brides travel with their gowns. While closet space is never guaranteed, many will do their best if room allows.

A sweet tip shared by several Air New Zealand crew (who were also Gown & Altar brides) is to bring a small treat as a thank-you. Whittaker’s chocolate came up more than once. It’s never expected, but a thoughtful gesture if they help store your dress safely.

Always ask politely when boarding and thank them for any assistance.

Can you check a wedding dress on a plane?

Only as a last resort. If needed:

  • pack in hard suitcase
  • use tracking
  • fold securely

Carry-on is always safest.

Where do you put your wedding dress on a plane?

Most common options:

  • overhead locker
  • crew closet (if available)
  • folded inside carry-on

How to fold a dress for travel without wrinkles?

  • Use tissue layers
  • Roll skirts gently
  • Have a seamstress pack it if possible

Steam Your Dress upon Arrival

  • Hang immediately
  • Steam lightly from inside
  • Allow fabric to relax

Arrive at Your Destination Early

Give yourself time to:

  • unpack
  • steam
  • check the dress

What to do after your flight with Dress

  • Hang straight away
  • Air for 24 hours
  • Steam before wearing

After the wedding, have your gown professionally dry cleaned to preserve the fabric and remove invisible marks.
